Councilor's Name: Councilor Oldkirk

Bill to Propose: Remove all animal products from the compound
Additional Notes: Animals are not ours to eat or wear, yet our cafeteria and councilor penthouse serve meat dishes with alarming regularity. Not only that, but there are coats made of fur and animal skin in the marketplace! Therefore, I propose we ban all products used on the compound that are derived from animals. We must never kill or exploit animals for any reason whatsoever -- to do so is a sin against nature.

While I can understand the sentiments, it is a part of life. Each creature that lives does so at the expense of another. As well, the act of not consuming animals can cause an ecology to be negatively affected, as they are meant to be used in such a way.

Additionally, the human body was created to absorb certain nutrients from the flesh of animals, and not all of these can be replaced. And it is not as if we allow what is not eaten to go to waste.

Perhaps cutting back on some of the more frivolous things would be good, but a ban is unreasonable.

I may only be an Enforcer, but I would still like to object as strongly as my station allows.

You might as well ban us from eating plants, too, since they're living things. I've always wanted to say that to somebody like this...

I'm sorry, but I am going to have to be against this. There are non-humans in C.O, and some are absolute carnivores. Your bill proposal is virtually asking them to starve.

Even if I agreed that it was a sin to kill or exploit animals - which I do not - I would like to point out three things that make your suggestion patently ludicrous.

First: That there are several species amongst the Agents here that are purely carnivorous in nature, literally incapable of properly processing plant-based material. To deny them meat would literally be sentencing them to death or forcing them to quit their employ here. I, myself, require some amount of human blood to be at my best, which would strictly ban me from having a complete diet on campus.

Second: Removing meat from the diet of omnivorous species, such as the humans that represent the majority, requires significant dietary monitoring and use of supplements - many of which use animal components as filler, ironically! Given that we cannot and do not enforce dietary policies, due to the aforementioned species issue, to remove meat would be to cause a massive decrease of overall health of Agents, making our purpose much tougher.

Third: If we work off the idea that using animals is a sin, then technically, relying on other human beings - who are, themselves, animals, lest we forget - is sin as much. Indeed, to live is to 'sin', essentially inherently. To be selective in our sinning like that is rather silly, is it not?

Animals eating other animals is the most natural thing in the world. If that's a sin, then we're all doomed.

If God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them so delicious!

"From what I've seen of "nature" pain and death seem to be part of the cycle of things. Or however you want to put it.

"Given all the arguments thus far and the knowledge that we have better technologies at our fingertips than I can imagine, why don't you go ahead and propose a long, detailed report on how exactly to accommodate for all the lost nutrition and physical decline in health of our Agents and Enforcers--and I mean ALL the species, and then get back to us?

"As for the fur and skins, I personally think wearing and using the things is a filthy practice but there's no sense in banning one but allowing the other."

As a councilor one mayhaps say our primary duties are to represent our citizens and to do what is best for them. I do not believe I can simply vote for something that will be as unpopular as this.

In nature animals eat other animals all the time. That is the fact of life, they need to to survive. In my world, monsters eat humans to survive. One cannot punish those monsters just because they are doing what they were born to do.

So I vote no on this stupid bill. You cannot force your view on everyone else.

Hm... I do sympathize, of course. Few of my students felt similarly towards animals. It's that love and devotion that makes them so admirable, I suppose... However, I'm not here to debate morals. In fact, for the record, I'll stay neutral on the matter of whether using animal products or not is right or wrong.

What you're proposing at this very moment would expend much of our resources. Setting out Agents to find and dispose of all animal products, some private property... is not something we can afford at this moment. Throwing away the meat ingredients we purchased would also be wasteful. Not only that, but we would have to set up a regulatory team in order to seek out more animal products that are brought into the compound. I'm afraid that as far as our resources are concerned, there is no way we can spend them on something like this given what has been happening as of late.

Still, there is nothing stopping you from making an effort to persuade your agents and enforcers yourself. Using animal products is a choice, after all.
